Sony Ericsson W890i Review
 |
Sony Ericsson W890i is considered to be the successor of Sony
Ericsson W880i.Sony Ericsson has managed to gather all of the important
features of a modern handset in a thin phone that measures just
104x 46.5x 9.9 mm and has a weight of 78 grams,and with this thickness
the new Sony Ericsson W890i is one of the most thinnest 3G handsets
available on the market.
Sony Ericsson W890i will be available in three trims - Sparkling
Silver, Black and Mocha Brown and it will be available in stores
in the first part of the year 2008.
At first the handset will be available only in silver and brown
and the black version will come later , exactly like the case of
the Sony Ericsson W880i.

The phone comes in a retail package containing : Handset , 950 mAh
battery (BST-33 Li-Pol) , Charger , M2 memory card ( 2 GB ) , Stereo headset
, USB data cable , Software CD and the User Guide.
The display is using TFT technology has a 2 inch diagonal ( 30
x 40 mm ) and can show up to 262 000 colors at a resolution of 240x320
pixels. With this technical specs the display can accommodate up to 8 text
and 3 service lines in most cases.Like most new Sony Ericsson phones the
W890i has a quality display that can perform without any problems even
in direct sunlight or outdoors. In terms of picture quality, this is a
decent display but it is a little behind Sony Ericsson W880i because of
somewhat faded colors.
Sony Ericsson W890i has a 950 mAh Li-Pol battery (BST-33),and according
to the producer it can last up to 9 hours of talk time and 330 hours of
standby. It takes the handset around 2 hours to charge up.
Sony Ericsson W890i is similar in design to the W880i , but unlike
the W880i the new W890i has a more quality feel and feels more solid. On
the left site of the phone is the music key and the Fast Port socket ,
on the right side we can find the service LEDs , the camera button and
the volume rocker. On the back side we can see the 3,2 Megapixel camera
and the holes for carrying the phone and if you detach the battery cover
you'll see the M2 memory slot.
The keypad is a little bigger than the tiny keys of the W880i but
it's still quite small and cramped. If we compare the keys from Sony Ericsson
W880i to the new W890i we can say that the keys of W890i are significantly
improved and unlike it's predecessor you can actually use the keys in
the new model. The handset has an ambient light sensor that adjusts the
white backlighting of the keypad, which is not very bright.
The phone has EDR-enabled Bluetooth 2.0, the menu enables you to
turn on enhanced power saving mode. There is also A2DP support, which
allows employing wireless headsets with the W890i. Its data transfer speed
tops out at 100 Kb/s and all important profiles are supported. The W890i's
RSS reader and channels are no different from the one used in the Sony
Ericsson K660i.
The phone has 26 Mb of memory that can be used for media
files and applications , but in the sales package you will find a M2 memory
card with a capacity of 2 Gb,but the W890i can support up to 4 Gb.
One of the important things that Sony Ericsson introduced with the
new W890i , is Google Maps 2 in the handset's firmware.Thought the phone
hasn't any incorporated GPS receiver it can track the location through
cellular networks.
You can even have a log file tracking your routes and check out how
fast you were moving about with the help of diagrams. Similar applications
are found on all Sony Ericsson's handsets that come bundled with GPS-receivers.
The W890i has 5 preinstalled themes, and 3 games available: Lumines
Block, SIMS 2, Tennis Multiplay. As for the applications there the same
as on any other Sony Ericsson phone except for Music Mate 4 in which you
can use drums, guitar and synthesizer.
Other features are : Onboard organizer; flight mode; USB mass storage;
Access NetFront Web browser; RSS feeds; picture and video blogging; PictBridge
printing
Camera
Sony Ericsson W890i has a 3.2 Megapixel CMOS-matrix camera without autofocus.The
camera interface is the same as the one found in any CyberShot phone. We
can say that we are a little disappointed that the 3.2-megapixel camera
doesn't come with any LED flash or autofocus capability.
Pictures can be taken in the following resolutions:
* QXGA (2048x1536)
* UXGA (1600x1200)
* SXGA (1280x960)
* VGA (640x480)
Below you can see a couple of photos taken with Sony Ericsson W890i:
Videos can be recorded in two resolutions : (176x144, 128x96) and
the final product is saved in file format used for clips is 3GP. The quality
of clips is beneath any criticism; so far this has been the weakest spot
of all Sony Ericsson-branded devices.
In the new W890i , Sony Ericsson has updated the Walkman 2.0 to the new
version 3.0.The new version support DRM 2.0 as well as support for MTP
so you can make direct transfers from Media Player. The handset locates
all files and folders on the memory card, and then gets the necessary
data from ID3-tags. Supported audio formats - MP3, AAC, AAC+, E-AAC+,
WAV, WMA and m4a. There are no limitations on bit rates; you can also
upload files with VBR. The company recommends using files with 192 Kbit/s
bit rate.
There are a few small differences in design between the
new Walkman 3.0 version and the old one as well as a few changes designed
to make the application easier to use, the W890i also features a progressive
fast forward with customizable steps. The phone also has TrackID and an
RDS-enabled FM-radio.In the retail package you'll find the HPM-70 headset
which delivers pretty good sound quality
Conclusions
This model is set to arrive in stores around May for a price of 400 Euro
and a base warranty of 1 year. The W890i has a lot of new things , an updated
platform, HSDPA and EDGE connectivity, lightning fast interface and speedy3D
applications. If we take a look at it's features and the prices of it's
competitors we can say that the price is more than ok , and the W890i
is a good phone and it won't disappoint you.
