Nokia 6120 Review

The new Nokia 6120 has the appearance of an usual phone, but if we take a look beneath it's cover we will discover an impressive new product. The new Nokia 6120 is a smartphone for the mass-market with a reasonable price tag.The phone that is now available on the market and it is the closest to Nokia 6120 is the Nokia E50.The phone comes with a retail package containing: the handset,an USB data cable, Wired stereo-headset,the battery and the charger.

The new Nokia 6120 is very compact measuring just 105x46x15 mm and weights just 89 grams, being one of the most portable device in it's class.Having this dimensions Nokia 6120 slips with ease in any pocket or bag.The case is made out of plastic with some metal parts. The mix of several materials adds some nice touches to the handset's looks, making it so much eye-catching. Along the front plate's perimeter runs a fine (around 5 mm wide) decorative metal strip. It makes for a smooth transition between the phone's face and the side plates. The battery cover is reasonably tight and secure. The build quality is really good there aren't any parts making creaking noises or feeling loose.

The two available colors of the smartphone are : black and silver, with the front plate rim and the navigation cluster painted in one color regardless of which variant you choose. On the top left site of the screen we can notice the QVGA camera for video conferencing in 3G networks, also housed on the top end is the power button with an orange rim around it.

On the left side, where you would normaly find the volume rocker, the Nokia 6120 has the loudspeaker for playing back ring tones. Also on the left side is the memory expansion slot. This socket is covered by a plastic flap linked up with the casing, and beneath it are the holes for a carrying strap. On the right side is the volume rocker,on the bottom side we can find the dedicated camera button, the charger socket, the miniUSB slot and the 2.5mm audio jack for your headphones. On the backside the camera and the LED flash is housed.

The handset's display is based on the TFT technology with a resolution of 240x320 pixels and a diagonal of 2 inches. Thanks to its relatively tiny diagonal given the resolution, the picture on the screen sports really fine pixels, making it look very crisp and smooth. The display show up to 16 million colors and is well-visible in various environments.
The keypad are made of glossy plastic ,the keypad is well built and easy to work with. All buttons are lit in white, even though the navigation cluster is a tad dimmer, it seems to be easy to read in the dark. The backlighting brightness should fare well during long typing sessions, so your eyes won't get tired quickly.

As for the battery life the phone is equipped with a 820 mAh BL-5B battery. The producer claims that the battery will last for 3 hours of talk time (GSM networks), and 216 hours of standby. It takes the Nokia 6120 only 2 hours to charge up from empty to full. The SIM-card slot is situated directly below the battery - it slides out and you insert you card into the slot.

The available memory for the user is 20 Mb, with the possibility to extend it with the help of a memory card. The handset has support for USB 2.0 ,and the following modes are available :
" Data Transfer (Mass Storage USB) - memory cards is available, no drives required, as your OS identifies the handset automatically. Data transfer speed makes around 950 Kb/s (USB 2.0)
" PC Suite - used for device management via Nokia PC Suite, enables all features of the phone, data backup etc.
" Media Player (MTP protocol) - synchronization with Windows Media Player.
The phone has Bluetooth 2.0 with EDR support and it supports all available profiles including A2DP. The top speed you can get with the 6120's Bluetooth connection is around 100 Kb/s.

Camera

The handset has a 2 Megapixel CMOS camera, which doesn't differ from most other S60-powered models quality-wise. The pictures it takes have an average quality. The available resolutions are : 1600x1200, 1152x764, 640x480 and 320x240 pixels.
Video is recorded in quite mediocre quality, just like any other non video\imaging-centric solution. The 320x240, 176x144 and 128x96 pixels resolutions at 15 FPS are available, the 6120 saves all clips in .3GP files

Below you can see a couple of photos taken with Nokia 6120:

The smartphone runs on S60 3rd edition Feature Pack 1 with no changes for this phone in particular. Nokia 6121 has three preinstalled games : Marble , City Box and Highroller Casino, they are quite nice but you can always install you own games. The phone also has a few preinstalled applications like : QuickOffice,Adobe PDF..etc.The handset also shows off 3 preinstalled themes - Standard Blue, that made its first appearance with Feature Pack 1, and also black and cherry. focusing on multimedia features alone.

Conclusions
As in any other Nokia handset the reception quality was never a problem ,so the Nokia 6120 has a clear and a good quality sound.Nokia 6120 has a price tag of around 350 USD.The direct rival for the 6120 is the Nokia E50.But the E50 is on the market for quite some time unlike the new Nokia 6120 which has a few improvements like a 2 megapixel camera.
This smartphone can easily be a student's choice or picked by some user that looks for a reasonably priced device jam-packed with features.
