In April of 2005, Nokia announced a new line of mobile phones called the Nseries which focused on new multimedia technologies such as 3G, Carl Zeiss Optics, megapixel image sensors, and large amounts of memory. Three phones were announced as part of the Nseries - the N70, N90, and the N91.The N90 is the middle phone of the N series. It has a considerably redesigned 60th platform being the first representative of the new generation smartphones by Nokia. Nokia placed a smartphone into a clamshell body with a rotational upper part again. An innovation is placing a camera module separate from the main construction. The phone dimensions are small as compared with usual devices not smartphones (112x51x24 mm). But when comparing with smartphones you'll surely see the Nokia N90 almost completely similar to the Sony Ericsson P900, P910. The N90 is a dual mode phone with support for WCDMA/GSM (WCDMA 2100 networks) and tri-band GSM (GSM 900/1800/1900). The phone employs a unique four axis design which allows it to operate in four different modes:

" Fold Closed Mode - The Fold Closed Mode describes the mode when the phone is closed. All ongoing calls are ended and the main display is deactivated unless your headset is connected. You'll still see various status messages on the mini display on the outside of the phone and you'll be notified of incoming messages and calendar events.
" Fold Open Mode - As the name implies, the Fold Open Mode occurs when the fold is open. When you're in this mode, the main display lights, the keyboard is available and you have access to the menu.
" Imaging Mode - You get into Imaging Mode by doing the following: Open the fold 90 degrees and then hold the device sideways and turn the fold up such that the main display is now facing you. The side lens housed inside the camera module starts up and you're given the feel of operating a digital video camcorder. You can rotate the camera module 180 degrees counterclockwise and 135 degrees clockwise. In Imaging Mode, you can record videos, take pictures, edit video clips and images, and send live video during a video call.
" Camera Mode - Camera Mode is a quick way for you to use the N90 to take pictures. Turn the camera module when the fold is closed to activate the Camera Mode. The viewfinder will now appear on the mini display - You can even use the camera during an active call.

The external screen is comparable with Nokia 6230 in characteristics, 128x128 pixels (28x28 mm), up to 65K. The possibilities of the screen are impressing for this size and there are no comparable outer screens for the moment. It is readable in the sun which is an advantage. The main display on the inside measures 2.1 inches and is an active matrix 262,144 color panel with a resolution of 352 x 416 pixels.

An On/Off button on the top end is responsible for controlling the events on the external screen. The shutter button is on the right side, it activates voice dialing and voice control also. A 5D joystick mostly necessary for shooting is placed lower. An RS-MMC slot is placed on the right side. A standard Pop-Port is placed on the right side and a charger connector is near. Differently from the previous models the slot has been seriously changed - it got thinner. The N90 has broad messaging capabilities including support for MMS, SMS, and Instant Messaging. You'll also find a push email client with attachment support within the N90. This naturally leads into the connectivity capabilities of the N90 and you'll find broad support in the form of Bluetooth wireless technology v. 1.2 and USB 2.0. The keyboard is well-done, plastic button are backlit in white. A 4D navi button has an integrated OK button.

In order for the N90 to deliver exceptional photographic capabilities, it includes a 2 mega pixel camera with a maximum resolution of 1600 x 1200 and autofocus 20 x digital zoom. You'll find an integrated flash with an operating range of up to 1.5 meters. There are four flash modes - on, off, automatic, and red eye reduction. There are six capture scene modes including Close up Mode, Portrait, Landscape, Night, Sports, Automatic, and User-defined.The N90 is also a capable digital video camcorder providing the ability to capture MP4 format videos. The videos use MPEG-4 for video encoding and AAC-LC for audio encoding. Video capture is performed at either CIF resolutions (352 x 288 pixels) or at QCIF resolutions (176 x 144). The loading of the menu with the camera settings takes 2-3 seconds, when moving along the menu the delay forms a second or more.

Here you have an exemple of a picture taken with Nokia N90:

(click on the imagine for full size)

The following settings are present in the menu:
Scene - setting the shooted scene, automatic mode is on by default. It works well and needs no manual tuning. There are several shooting modes for those experienced ones - Close-Up Mode, Portrait, Landscape, User Defined, Sport, and Night. The number of settings is comparable to digital cameras and in mobile phone world only Sony Ericsson S700, K750 can show the same.
Flash - works either automatically or with an effect of red eye suppress, the flash may be on or off also. The manufacturer claims an effective distance of 1.5 m. In our case the optimal results were gained at the distance of 1 m. At a closer distance the frame is spoiled. In general the flash is too weak for the CMOS-matrix possibilities. The last makes good photos even in poor light, they really look better than taken using the flash.
White balance - is determined automatically. There are several extra modes - Sunny, Cloudy, Incandescent, Fluorescent, Tungsten. The plus of the interface is some part of the image is always seen so that you can see the picture changing depending on the selected mode.
Exposure value ranges from -2 to +2 with the step forming 0.1. The changes applied are also instantly seen on the viewfinder picture.
Colour Tone - the number of colour modes is high, black and white, Negative and Sepia besides usual colour. There is no need in the effects, since the photos may be changed in the editor later.
The following settings should be mentioned:
Choosing a resolution - 1600x1200, 800x600 and 640x480 pixels. The higher one is called Print.
Shooting mode - usual, series, timer.

The device is run by Symbian version 8.1a which means using the EKA1 core being similar to the one used in Symbian versions 6.1, 7.0 (different to the EKA2 providing real-time multitasking). The model supports Feature Pack3 which means the presence of a scalable interface and fonts with changeable size. That is one of the most serious improvements in the smartphone. The second improvement concerns security. The N90 processor is similar to the one of the Nokia 6680 having the clock rate of 220 MHz, no improvements in productivity, even slower work. Subjectively, operating speed decreased insignificantly, from 5 to 10 percent in various modes. The phone has 31 MB of internal memory which is then used to store all the various data. ou'll find a RealPlayer Media Player application built right into the phone which is capable of playing back a variety of file formats including: MP3, AAC, Real Audio, WAV, Nokia Ring Tones, AMR, AMR-WB, AMR-NB, AU, MIDI, H.263, JPEG, JPEG2000, EXIF 2.2, GIF 87/89, PNG, BMP (W-BMP), MBM, and MPEG-4. You can download and play multimedia files using the RealPlayer Media Player and also stream media files from compatible online media portals. The phone also supports full screen video playback when viewing video clips. Nokia N90 failed to run the majority of the applications made for Nokia smartphones. The main problem was the screen resolution, every attempt to redraw an image for a high resolution resulted in smartphone restart. The software and standard applications coincide with those of the Nokia smartphone family, no significant differences. The main innovation is a voice recognition system independent from pronunciation. It needs no special bookmarks. That means you just need to activate dialing and name the user, the device will find it in the phone book and dial the number. Menu is navigated the same way. The system works well being also comfortable
