M800 Watch Phone Review
|

|
The M800 is the third of the "M-Series" mobile watch
phone from the Chinese phone manufacturer. This model is also one
of the thinnest triband GSM watch phone on the market, and weighting
in just 70 grams it's also one of the lightest.
The CECT M800 is not just a watch that you can use to make
phone calls , it manages to pack some pretty impressive performances
and turns out as a high-tech device.
The M800 is about the size of a large G-Shock watch, but is
actually quite light.
|
The watch comes with a retail package that contains : two 550 mAh
batteries, a travel charger with a USB connector, a charger/data cable
for the phone, a charger cable for the bluetooth headset, english user
manual and a warranty card..
Let's talk a little about it's display:
The watch phone has a 1.6" TFT touchscreen color display that
can show up to 262 000 colors and can also supports handwriting input.Overall
the screen has a pretty good quality and we were so pleasantly surprised
with the quality of the movie playback which is actually better than a
lot of other handsets available on the market.

This should make it possible to send text messages at acceptable
speeds but we'll cover this part later on in the review. There is also
a small stylus included which telescopes out to a finger numbing size.
Just pull it out from the side of the strap and you're ready to use it.
On the left side, there are three buttons, the bottom is for left
soft menu and the rest are customizable shorcuts, the defaults are for
alarm and text inbox menu.

On the right side there are 2 buttons and the USB/charging port.
The top button is the Green Call Button. The bottom button is the Red
Hang Up Button/ Back button. This is also a useful shortcut in starting
and ending calls. A little retractable plastic cover protects the USB
port. The speaker is located at the bottom and the microphone is the little
hole on the left side of the screen, just beside the chrome plating, the
speakers are surprisingly loud and clear, but it does distort slightly
at maximum volume.Generally if you do not use the bluetooth headset, you
have to engage the handsfree and speak close to the mic. The A2DP Bluetooth
Stereo headset is an excellent accessory to the M800. This headset is
included in the M800 package and it has a very good sound quality.Calls
sound clear and static free. And you can listen wirelessly to mp3 songs
playing on the M800. A good stereo A2DP bluetooth headset is pretty expensive
by itself and it can also be used with your computer or PDA via Bluetooth.

To initiate a call you need to tab the call menu in
the standby mode, then you can tab in the digits or tab the phonebook
or you can just go to the phonebook using the right soft button in the
standby mode.
On the back you can find the sim card slot as well as the battery slot.
You need to slide the battery into the slot then lock the latch to make
sure it wont fell off.
As we said earlier the M800 is a pretty high tech device and to support
this statement we just have to mention a few of the features available
on this phone.
M800 has bluetooth, GPRS, MMS, WAP 2.0, internal memory 128 MB, MP3/MP4
player, flight mode, A2DP bluetooth profile and a touchscreen. However,
it lacks Java, Email, Vibration, and Voice Command, features we would
love to see in a watchphone.
Tapping on the touchscreen brings up the main icon based page which is
quite easy to use.
Main Menu
The menu is really simple and it resembles the ones of Nokia or Sony
Ericsson phones, the menu is a matrix made out of icons and every icon
has it's own submenu that consists of list of more submenus.
For exemple you have : Messages , Phonebook..etc.There are icons
for the phonebook, messaging, call log, settings, multimedia, files, call
profiles, calender and internet. It also charges when connected to a laptop.
Nothing much can be expected for such a small phone, it only have standard
features, nevertheless it should be enough as long as you can talk and
text with it.
In the standby mode, you can view the clock, right and left soft
menu at the bottom and the call menu shortcut in the middle bottom. On
the top, you can view the indicators, such as signal indicator, sound
indicator, phone lock indicator, new text indicator and also a battery
indicator. The phone comes with 128 Mb of user manageable space.
As for battey life we can say that the battery lasts for about 2 days
without any problems and you also get a spare battery included.
After you've read the review so far you're probably asking yourself
"How do I type on this on phone ? "
The answer is really simple : You just have to use the stylus to write
on the mini keyboard that appears on the screen. It takes a few minutes
to get used to it but once you got the hang of it it's really easy and
being a touchscreen device the typing speed is really good.We found the
keyboard to be quite accurate and user-friendly.As we mentioned before
the phone has handwriting recognition, but it is slow and you have to
write each letter individually so it's better to just use the virtual
keyboard. The watch phone has also support for English, Arabic, Simplified
Chinese and other languages as well.
Surprisingly for a "watch phone" the watch function is
quite limited to a digital watch and the default analog watch. The downside
is that the screen switches off after 30 seconds and you have to touch
the screen or button to activate the display. This can prove to be very
annoying.
Conclusions
At the price ranging from USD 180-220, the M800 itself only has the features
of a standard mobile phone at price comparable to USD 150, however the
price is understandable due to the fact that the phone comes in a very
small size and can be wear as a watch.
